Recent Donataions

In March 2010, at her institution as twelfth rector of Emmanuel, the Rev. Pamela Werntz donated a Stewartia sapling. Carefully planted by Bernd Kasemir and Michael Scanlon, it has already bloomed profusely. We're grateful to Pam for her beautiful gift, which we trust will grow to be a magnificient tree. We also thank the Hope-in-Action Campaign for its gift of daylilies, which were recently planted behind the sunny circle in the same section of our garden. Barbara Rose planted "Pink Cadenza", "Cantata in Pink", and "Melody in Pink." We hope they will bloom this summer in honor of our growing relationship with the Boston Public Quartet's program at the Chittick School in Mattapan.

Our garden is our common ground and commemorative space. To support the cost of maintaining and enhancing it, please donate to our Garden Fund to commemorate a loved one, show appreciation of someone special, honor a worthy group, or simply give back to the Emmanuel community.  Please see our list of those honored by the garden.  Please join our Green Team in this effort with your gifts and gardening skills.

History & Plans

After the restoration work that followed a fire in 2000, our frontscape looked rather forlorn. Thanks to a grant from the City of Boston, our wrought-iron railing was installed and blue-stone circles were laid for a meditation garden. Inspired by parishioner Armand Andreassian, who planted an American elm by the access ramp in memory of his father, the team aimed to create a garden that would carry Emmanuel's beauty out to the sidewalk. We began fundraising for the project in 2007 by collecting gifts in memory of vestry member Frank Rose, beloved husband of Barbara Pierce Rose. Emmanuelite Susan Doolittle created a design for the four sections extending from the Lindsey Chapel to our eastern border beyond the ramp. Tom Strangfeld of Newton gave his creative and much-appreciated advice on design. In the Fall of 2008, Hartney-Greymont of Needham prepared the beds and planted shrubs and perennials. We are grateful for their generous donation of manpower to reduce our installation cost. The Green Team now plants the circles with annuals in the Spring and bulbs in the Fall. We are raising funds to extend the sprinkler system to the beds along the ramp.
